Authorities say they are investigating an incident in which a package, apparently intentionally rigged to look like an explosive device, was left in a vacant home in Vestal.

June 30, Police were called to the property on Lagrange Street, which is owned by the Broome County Land Bank, as a maintenance contractor discovered the suspicious package.

Vestal Police contacted Endicott’s bomb squad and a robot was sent in to evaluate the situation while several residents were evacuated from nearby homes.

It was determined the package was harmless and neighbors were allowed to return.

The Land Bank had just taken title to the property from Broome Countyy a few days earlier.  The County had foreclosed on the plot in April of last year.
