Engineering Review at Former Broome Public Library
Architects and engineers have started assessments of a former downtown Binghamton library for a long-delayed project planned for SUNY Broome Community College.
The interior and exterior review of the Exchange Street building began this week, exactly 15 years after the county's new library opened on Court Street.
SUNY Broome President Kevin Drumm said plans call for the creation of a culinary and events planning center in the old library building. The project could cost up to $12 million.
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Drumm said the historic library should be "a stunning venue" for the programs.
The library was built as the result of a gift from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
Drumm said the architectural and engineering teams are working to determine what it will cost to renovate the building.
The college president said he is hopeful some construction work at the site could get underway by summer.
Parking issues still must be addressed as the project moves forward. The closure of the city-owned Collier Street garage presents a new challenge but other nearby parking options are being discussed.
