The former Christ the King School on Davis Avenue and a neighboring structure that housed a convent should be demolished in less than a month.

The school, which was built in 1962, was last used for classes in the mid-1970s.

United Methodist Homes later had its corporate office at the site. The property was no longer utilized after it sustained heavy flood damage in June 2006.

Broome County later took possession of the property because taxes had not been paid.

County legislator Jason Shaw said workers recently started removing asbestos from the buildings. He said the demolition is expected to be completed by mid-February.

The project will cost about $290,000. The county, along with the Broome County Land Bank and the Town of Union are paying for the demolition.

Shaw said planning is continuing to develop a community garden on the site.

Some bricks from the former school will be set aside for people interested in having a memento from the old building.

Jason Shaw will discuss the project, including how one of the bricks may be obtained, on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
