Mayor John Bertoni said there will be no officer at police headquarters during certain hours when no prisoners are being held in the station.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Bertoni said the change will make another officer available to patrol village streets.

The mayor said the new policy could be implemented within the next several weeks.

The police station is located at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Park Street, a block north of Union-Endicott High School.

Bertoni said a phone and cameras will be installed at the station so people will able to contact the county communications center to report an emergency. He said the village is in the process of seeking cost estimates for the needed work.

Endicott Police Chief Michael Cox, who is retiring from the department in May, said the nighttime policy will be similar to that already used by the Vestal and Johnson City police departments.

Cox said based on past experience of how often prisoners are held at the station, it likely would be staffed about a third of the time at night. He said it will take time to determine whether the policy change turns out to be cost-effective.
