Police Chief Michael Cox in March announced he planned to retired from the village department. At the time, he said his retirement would be effect on May 24.

In a recent interview on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Mayor John Bertoni said he hoped a formal announcement of the choice for chief to be made before then.

Bertoni said "quite a few" people expressed interest in the job. He said there were discussions with "eight or nine" prospective candidates before the field was narrowed down.

The process is somewhat complicated because if the next chief will be coming to Endicott from another agency, a waiver regarding retirement benefits would have to be approved.

Bertoni said the Cox might be asked to remain on as chief until his successor is able to begin work for the village. The mayor said he believed Cox would be willing to stay on until the new chief could start.

Cox could not be reached for comment about the situation or whether he would consider remaining on the job to accommodate the leadership transition.
