The town of Union's two public libraries hope residents this year will approve an increase in funding.

The George F. Johnson Memorial Library in Endicott and Your Home Public Library in Johnson City receive support through a tax levy.

Edward Dunscombe, director of the Endicott library, says the town libraries have not had a funding increase in six years.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Dunscombe said the libraries are seeking volunteers to gather signatures on petitions to put the funding proposal on the November ballot.

Dunscombe said the libraries receive most of their money for operations through an assessment on town residents. He said about 2,000 signatures must be collected to place the plan before Union voters in the fall.

Orientation sessions for petition carriers are being held at both libraries this week. The next session at the Endicott library will be Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. The next session at the Johnson City library will be Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
