It was a tough day for the Maine-Endwell Spartans football team.  The Elmira Express spoiled M-E's Homecoming with a 42-6 romp at Spartan Stadium. Elmira ups its record to 5-1 while the Spartans fall to 5-1.  Elmira's offense is built on misdirection running plays but the passing game paid big dividends in today's (Saturday's) win.  Elmira's first three touchdowns came on passing plays.

The Elmira Express took a 12-0 lead into the locker room at the half.  Then they added a 19-yard TD reception with 7:50 left in the third quarter to up their lead to 20-0.  The Express went on to outscore the Spartans 30-6 in the second half.

It was an uncharacteristic day on the football field for Maine-Endwell.  The Spartans had a 62-game winning streak snapped in last season's state semi-final.  Then they started a new winning streak by going 5-0 to begin this year.

The Spartans were playing "up" in classification.  Elmira is a Class AA school while M-E is a Class B size school.  The classification is based on student enrollment.

Maine-Endwell will have little time to reflect on their loss.  They play another larger school next weekend.  On Friday night they travel to Union-Endicott to meet the Class A Tigers.  Prior to today's game U-E was the only team to hand Elmira a loss this season.
