The Southern Tier is at risk of losing some of the gauges that measure stream levels and rainfall amounts due to a lack of funding. The Susquehanna River Basin Commission says 18 stream and 16 rain guages could go off-line unless federal funds are approved for their maintenance and operation.

The commission says $215,000 is needed to keep the devices operational.

The commission says the guages are important to the health and safety of the region that has seen numerous davastating floods over the past several years.

Stream and rain guages that could be targeted are in Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Otsego, Steuben, Tioga, Cortland, Madison, Otsego and Schoharie counties.
