As many as forty residential water customers in the city of Binghamton are without service because of frozen pipes and lines.

The problem has been affecting water systems across the Northeast in recent weeks. The situation worsened after record-cold temperatures in February.

Several homes on a single street on Binghamton's South Side have been without water for days because of a frozen line.

City councilman John Matzo, who represents the neighborhood, says water department workers have been trying to determine what can be done to restore service on St. Clair Avenue.

At least six homes on the street have no water service. The city has supplied bottled water to some of the affected residents.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Matzo said some people have been without water for nearly a week. He said: "This is not acceptable."

Matzo said he's been told two families have left their homes and now are staying with relatives because of the water disruption. He suggested the city might consider relocating the four remaining families to hotels while water to their homes remains unavailable.

A fire hydrant at the end of the street is out of service because of the frozen water line.

Water department officials say they've been doing what they can to address the problems but the current situation involving frozen lines is worse than any other winter in recent memory.

Residents and water supervisors say there have been ongoing problems with frozen pipes on St. Clair Avenue in recent years. They are hoping a reconstruction project planned for this year will provide a long-term solution.
