A 36-year-old Binghamton man was taken into custody shortly after he allegedly scrawled offensive messages on downtown buildings.

City police say Gavin Humphrey was charged with making graffiti in connection with the daytime incidents.

A Binghamton city government employee spotted a man apparently using a paint marker to write a short message on the window of a Court Street business early this afternoon.

The witness notified police and the graffiti suspect was apprehended a short time later about a block away, near the Governmental Plaza on State Street.

Messages which were believed to have been written during the daytime graffiti spree were visible on at least three downtown buildings. Two of them included a word considered by many to be vulgar.
