An expansion project is planned for a downtown Binghamton student housing and commercial building.

The Broome County Industrial Development Agency has accepted an application from Alfred Weissman Real Estate for a proposal that could add rooms and possibly businesses to the former HSBC Bank Building at 20 Hawley Street.

The complex at Hawley and State streets is located next to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena and across the street from the downtown governmental plaza.

Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan told WNBF News he's pleased by ongoing efforts to attract more downtown residents.

The Weissman expansion project must clear some hurdles with the city planning commission and the zoning board of appeals.

One potential obstacle is the need for a parking variance for the site.

Dozens of new rooms may be added to the existing complex and at least one business might be located on the west side of the building.
