A woman who has never been described as "retiring" is retiring.

The long-time head of the local, hands-on children’s museum is stepping down.

Officials at the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier have announced that Margaret, “Pokey” Crocker will retire effective May 30.

She has been executive director since 1989 when the very popular museum/playground was redesigned and moved to the Ross Park grounds on Morgan Road from the former Columbus School in downtown Binghamton.

The president of the Discovery Center Board, Brian Foy, is chairing a search committee for a replacement.

In a statement from the Discovery Center, Crocker thanked the community for the support she has gotten over the decades and said she planned to spend more time with family and traveling
