An abandoned shoe production facility in the town of Union could be torn down to make way for the offices of National Pipe and Plastics.

Plans call for the old Endicott Johnson Corporation building on North Page Avenue in West Endicott to be demolished with state economic development money.

Officials at National Pipe and Plastics hope to relocate the company's Vestal headquarters to the town of Union site.

The project has been given a "priority ranking" by the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council.

An application for money to cover demolition costs will be submitted to the state.

National Pipe last year closed its Vestal factory and opened a new manufacturing operation in West Endicott on a site adjacent to the closed Endicott Johnson building.

Neighborhood residents have been working for years to have the abandoned shoe factory removed. Some have also been battling National Pipe since it started making polyvinyl chloride pipe at the site near their homes.

National Pipe and Plastics president David Culbertson and Union town supervisor Rose Sotak were not available Tuesday afternoon to discuss the project planned for the North Page Avenue property.
