Demolition work is underway for a 70-room hotel planned for the site of an old school in the town of Dickinson.

The Microtel project had been under discussion for years but a few issues that had caused delays were cleared up in recent months.

A Scranton-based development group last July acquired three adjacent properties on Prospect and Adams streets for $450,000.

Houses were on two of the sites and an abandoned school building was on the third parcel.

The former school structure most recently housed an insurance business and several apartments.

Dickinson town supervisor Michael Marinaccio says the demolition work appears to be going as expected.

Gorick Construction Company of Binghamton is removing the existing structures.

Construction work on the hotel is expected to begin this spring and the facility could open next year.

The future hotel site is just east of the Airport Road exit from Route 17.
