Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that claimed the life of a Delaware County woman.

Sheriff’s officials along with the  Delhi, Andes and Bovina Fire Departments responded to a call about a house fire on Maggie Hoag Road in Delhi at around 1 a.m. February 6 that was reported by a neighbor.

Responding crews found the home fully engulfed and were unable to find the homeowner.

After the fire was knocked down, a New York State Police Cadaver Detection dog found the body of 51 year old Helen Stroppel in the ruins.

Officials are looking at secondary heat sources like kerosene space heaters in the house as possibly starting the fire.

No foul play is suspected.

Stroppel’s cause of death is also still under investigation.
