Delaware County Sheriff’s officials say a man who held law enforcement officers at bay for several hours starting at around 1 p.m. August 11 and forced the lockdown of homes in the Town of Bovina is dead.

Authorities were called to a possible domestic incident on Route 5 where a person was reportedly being held at gunpoint.

Deputies and New York State Police say when they got on the scene, the victim was fleeing the home after being released by the gunman.

The authorities say they determined 32 year old Justin Geraghty had come out of a wooded area and taken the homeowners hostage following an earlier domestic incident nearby.

After several hours of unsuccessful negotiations, members of the State Police Special Operations Team (SORT) deployed tear gas into the home and authorities lost contact with Geraghty.

When they went inside, investigators found Geraghty’s body.  Police say Geraghty had fatally shot himself.

The sheriff’s office says the man had been wanted on a parole violation and by Delhi police for burglary, assault and petit larceny.

There were no reports of additional injuries.
