Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond is offering reassurances to all school Superintendents and School Boards in the County in the wake of concern about school safety.

In a letter to the districts, the Sheriff says, however, “we can no longer pretend schools are safe” from events like the shootings at schools around the country.

DuMond says, in his opinion, a properly trained law enforcement officer, in the form of a public resource officer, should be on site at each school building to protect students and faculty.

The Sheriff says there are 14 public schools, over 6,500 students and over 700 faculty members in Delaware County.  He says adding a Deputy to each school would be cost effective to ensure a safer school setting.

DuMond says he is urging ever district in Delaware County to consider implementing School Resource Officers when budgeting for staff.

Meanwhile, residents are urged to say something if they see or hear something suspicious.  Incidents should be reported directly to authorities and not posted on social media.
