The Delaware County Sheriff is defending his department's release of reports of illegal drug activity in the county.

Sheriff Thomas Mills says there has been a significant surge in drug activity in Delaware County and he has been cautioned by some people that the issuing of information in news releases about drug cases may create negative publicity.

Mills says he believes it's important to publicize the arrests to help deter crime and, in his words: "Caution those on the border of indecision that the Sheriff of Delaware County is on duty. "

Mills says the frequency of local larcenies and burglaries have been increasing as a result of the drug problem in the county. He says the problem will only grow worse if left unaddressed.
