The relatively mild temperatures in the Twin Tiers are about to give way to bone-chilling, sub-zero readings.

Although daytime highs are expected to be above freezing on Tuesday and Wednesday, things will change dramatically after that.

David Nicosia, warning coordination meteorologist at the Binghamton National Weather Service office, said the coldest air of the winter season is headed toward the region.

Forecasters say much colder air will pour into the northeastern United States late Wednesday.

Overnight low temperatures could plunge into the single digits starting Thursday night. The overnight low Saturday night likely will be below zero over the entire region and wind chills will make it feel even colder.

The extremely cold air from Canada will mean temperatures will struggle to make it into the double digits on Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to moderate a bit by next Monday with forecasters calling for partly sunny skies and a high of around 25 for Binghamton.
