Broome County Executive Debra Preston says giving two County department heads and the Deputy County Executive ten percent raises is a good idea but some Democrats disagree.

Preston says after former Deputy Executive Bijoy Datta quit, his salary was saved and could be divided between Deputy County Executive John Bernardo, Social Services Commissioner Art Johnson and Public Works Commissioner Dan Schofield, who took over the duties that had been handled by Datta.

Some legislators say handing out raises to department heads when some 20 county employees could be losing their jobs under the current budget proposal isn’t right.
