On March 31, 2014,  Patrolman David W. Smith Jr., an eighteen and a half year veteran of the Johnson City Police Department responded to a disturbance call. It would be his last.

Immediately upon arriving on the scene of the call, a male subject attacked Patrolman Smith as he was attempting to get out of his patrol car. The man was able to disarm Patrolman Smith, and ultimately shot Patrolman Smith two times, with these shots proving to be fatal.A

The third annual D.W. Smith Jr. Memorial Remembrance Run / Walk is scheduled for  this Sunday, June 11th and if you live or work in Johnson City, you should be prepared for street closures starting at 8:45am. These are the streets that will be closed:

Main Street between Jenison Avenue and Baldwin Street
North Arch Street between Main Street and North Broad Street
North Broad Street between Pratt Avenue and Harry L. Drive
Carlton Street
North Hudson Street between Carlton Street and Harry L. Drive
North Street
Lester Avenue between Harry L. Dr and Main Street
Service Road
Brocton Street
Pratt Avenue
Helen Drive

All streets are expected to re-open around 10am.

You should also know that Harry L. Drive between Toys R. Us Plaza and North Broad Street will be reduced to one-way traffic only. There will be no eastbound traffic (west- bound will remain open). The Harry L. Drive detour is as follows: Use New York State Route 17 between exits 70 & 71 (Rt. 201 & Airport Rd) –or- Fairview Street between Reynolds Road and Academy Street.
