Assemblyman Clifford Crouch says he will not run for the Senate seat vacated after Thomas Libous was found guilty of lying to FBI agents.

Crouch - a Chenango County Republican - released a statement Monday afternoon announcing he plans to focus on his current work in the state Assembly.

Crouch said he had been approached by many constituents who had encouraged him to seek the 52nd district Senate seat.

The statement from Crouch came out just over 24 hours after Binghamton Mayor Richard David made a similar announcement, indicating he intended to pursue the work he started when he took office last year.

County Republican leaders in the district have yet to announce who they will support in the November 3 special election.

On Thursday, former Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala of Endwell plans to announce she'll be a Democratic candidate for the Senate seat.
