A crash involving three tractor trailers on Route 81 South in the City of Binghamton left one of the drivers dead and caused a portion of Routes 81 and 17 to be closed for over two hours in both directions this morning.  Police and the Department of Transportation established a detour off the major roadways.  By late morning 81 North was reopened but 81 South remains closed as of 2:45 PM.  Police are reconstructing the crash scene.

Because of the shutdown traffic has been reduced to a crawl around the streets of Binghamton.  Route 11, the Brandywine and Court and Main Streets are jammed.  Many of the tractor trailers that normally use 81 South are finding other ways to get to their destination and that has slowed traffic even more. Travelers are advised to allow plenty of extra time if they are coming into Binghamton until 81 South reopens.
