What started as a small cooperative effort between a couple of churches is now a large volunteer organization, helping hundreds of Broome County residents.

The Broome County Council of Churches this weekend celebrated 75 years of service with a jubilee.

The Council started as a meeting between two ministers sitting on a front porch in 1939.

The United Churches of Binghamton was formed in 1941.

One of the biggest and most visible components under the Council of Churches is the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse, or CHOW, which will distribute over two million pounds of food to children and families this year.

Other programs include Faith in Action Volunteers and jail and hospital ministries.
