A Town of Homer woman was arrested after a four-month-old girl she was caring for sustained a serious head injury.

Authorities say 52-year-old Cindy Petrella of White Bridge Road was charged with reckless assault of a child and first-degree assault.

Investigators say Petrella called for an ambulance to respond to her home early Saturday evening.

The baby was taken by ambulance to Cortland Regional Medical Center. She then was transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where she was reported in stable condition.

Officials say Petrella is accused of shaking the young girl, causing her brain to bleed.

Petrella was arrested around 2:15 p.m. Monday. She was arraigned in Town of Homer court and sent to Cortland County Jail on $2,500 bail.

Cortland Police Lieutenant Rick Troyer said his agency is handling the investigation because it initially was believed the baby may have been injured in the city.
