Investigators say a Cortland County man is believed to have stolen thousands of dollars from a parent-teachers organization while he was the president of the group.

Authorities say 39-year-old Kurt Kleefeld of Homer faces six felony charges for the alleged theft of cash from the Homer Elementary Parent Teachers Organization.

Homer police say Kleefeld was arrested this morning. He was charged with three counts of grand larceny and two counts of falsifying business records. He also was charged with scheme to defraud.

Officials say police were notified last October of a possible theft from the organization. The treasurer discovered discrepancies in financial records.

An investigation revealed that several thefts occurred from December 2012 through August 2014. More than $11,900 is missing from the parent-teachers organization account.

Kleefeld was arraigned in Homer town court. He was released on his own recognizance to await further court action.
