The building most recently had housed an insurance business and several apartments. The Broome County Sheriff's Office and the Prospect Terrace Fire Department recently utilized the building for training purposes.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Marinaccio said the proposed Microtel hotel is expected to have about 70 rooms.

Marinaccio said some issues had held up work on the project but they've been addressed. Asbestos abatement work is getting underway in preparation for demolition of the old school.

Marinaccio said he believes construction on the hotel likely will start in the spring.

The town supervisor said the project will add to the local tax base while eliminating what he described as a "not very pretty building."

The property is located near the Airport Road exit off Route 17.
