The organizers of a project to build a Tioga County dog park say the facility could be open by the end of summer.

Construction is continuing at the site on the north side of Hickories Park in the town of Owego.

Businessman Adam Weitsman provided a donation to fund the canine playground to honor his late sister, Rebecca. It will be known as the "Rebecca Weitsman Memorial Dog Park."

Project manager Steve Paul said excavation work began in late May. He said progress was slowed during June because of excessive rain.

Water lines were installed to the dog park site and electric poles were relocated.

A doghouse-style storage structure has been built on the site. The building is near the area of the park's entrance.

Members of the Owego Dog Owners Group have been working on plans for the project for years.

The organization leaders hope the dog park will open by the end of August or early in September.

Those interested in joining the group or volunteering to help operate the facility may visit www.owegodogs.org for information.
