Cold Snap Causes Twin Tiers Water Problems

Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file]
The frigid temperatures have resulted in frozen water pipes in the Binghamton area.

One school was closed on Monday because of a burst water pipe. Union-Endicott School District officials say the incident happened at the Thomas J. Watson Elementary School on Ridgefield Road in the town of Owego. A district spokesman said it was hoped the school could open on Tuesday.

Several other problems involving frozen water lines in homes and businesses were reported throughout the region.

Fire and water departments were dealing with issues caused by broken pipelines.

Local officials urged building owners to take precautions to try to prevent water lines from freezing as the cold weather continues.
