A Chenango Forks teen is recovering from injuries suffered when, Broome County Sheriff’s officials say, he apparently passed out while driving and crashed into a sign post and utility pole.

Authorities say 17 year old Mason Dietzen was driving on State Route 12 near the entrance to the Price Chopper Plaza, north of Chenango Bridge Road in the Town of Chenango at 1:50 p.m. April 21 when his 1986 BMW crossed from the southbound lane, into the northbound lane, hitting the sign post and crashing, head-on into the utility pole.

Deputies say the vehicle immediately caught fire but the teen was able to get out on his own.

Dietzen suffered injuries to his face and mouth and was taken to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment.

He was ticketed for moving from a lane unsafely.

The crash closed a portion of Route 12 in the area for about 40 minutes.
