Two Section 4 football powers earned New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships today in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.  Chenango Forks and Maine-Endwell both captured state titles this afternoon.

Chenango Forks topped the Rye Neck Panthers 28-27 to win the Class C crown.  Isaiah Zimmer rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Blue Devils to the championship victory.  The Panthers scored with 4:02 to play in the game to cut The Forks lead to one point.  Rye Neck went for the two-point conversion and Mike Zurenda stopped the ball carrier short to preserve the single point lead and give Chenango Forks its third State Championship in the school’s football history.

In the Class B title game Maine-Endwell trailed 14-0 after three first-half fumbles.  But the Spartans kept battling back to win their third consecutive state title.  Three years ago the Spartans won the Class A Championship. Then last season the school’s enrollment dropped putting M-E in Class B.  They went on to win the B title and set the stage for a “three-peat”.

Quarterback Kyle Gallagher hit receiver Jake Sinicki with a four-yard touchdown pass to pull the Spartans to within one-point at 21-20 with just four seconds to play.  Coach Matt Gallagher elected to go for the win instead of kicking the one-point conversion.  Quarterback Gallagher found ace running back Darnell Woolfolk open in the end zone and lofted a soft pass completion to him to clinch it for the Spartans making the final score 22-21.  Woolfolk earned Player of the Game honors with 24 carries for 169 yards.  With today’s win the Spartans stretch their winning streak to 38 in a row.
