Part of Patch Road in Chenango Bridge is closed after a railroad bridge was damaged when it was struck by a too-tall garbage truck.

Authorities say a Waste Management truck driven by 32-year-old Frank Contino slammed into the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway span Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, the bridge sustained extensive damage.

Investigators say Contino tried to drive under the bridge despite a posted height restriction. Contino was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device.

Patch Road will be closed between Jason Drive and Asbury Avenue because of the damage.

Authorities say railroad representatives said repair work will get underway "as soon as possible."
