Binghamton Bearcats Head Men's Basketball Coach Tommy Dempsey has agreed to a contract extension from the University.  Dempsey, who was in the final season of a multi-year contract ,will continue on as head coach at least through the 2020-21 campaign.  The announcement was made by Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott at an afternoon press conference.

Dempsey is in his seventh season as the head coach of Binghamton's men's basketball program.  Over the last two seasons the Bearcats compiled a record of 23-40.  So far in the current campaign the Bearcats are 1-2 and play at Big Ten member Northwestern on Friday night.

The Bearcats have struggled on the basketball court in the rebuilding years following their 2008-09 America East Championship and NCAA Tournament bid. However in the classroom the program has flourished. The men's basketball team was the recipient of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Academic Excellence Award for the 2017-18 season.  To be eligible for the award a team has to have a minimum 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).  The Bearcats compiled a program best 3.27 GPA.  Eight players earned a 3.3 GPA or better for Binghamton.
