Broome County has over a half dozen senior centers but many residents are unaware of what they have to offer.

Speaking on the November 21 edition of the weekly, local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, Broome County Office for Aging Nutrition Services Coordinator, Donna Bates breaks some misconceptions about senior centers.

Bates says, while  people can play cards and visit with friends at the centers, there are many classes, including college courses and computer instruction that are offered at the facilities.

The center also offers tasty, low cost meals to anyone in the community, even if they are not over the age of 60.

Bates also says the Meals on Wheels program is also underutilized and more seniors can be added to the routes to have balanced meals delivered to their home.

More information about the senior centers can be found by just visiting your neighborhood center or by visiting the Broome County Office for Aging website.

Southern Tier Close Up can be heard Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
