Local costs associated with the planned buyouts of flood-damaged properties in Broome, Tioga and 15 other New York counties will be covered using federal funds being funneled through the state.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says the state will use money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Cuomo says the funds from the Community Development Block Grant disaster recovery program will cover the 25 percent non-federal share of buyouts.

More than 1100 properties have been processed for buyouts by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The total cost of the buyout program in New York State has been estimated at $194 million. That means the non-federal share would be over $48 million.
