In a requested encore presentation of Southern Tier Close Up, Broome County Sheriff Captain Fred Akshar II, speaking on the May 16 edition of the weekly local public affairs program talks extensively at some of the most recent efforts by bad guys to try to part residents from their hard-earned cash.

Prevalent scams recently include those involving calls or emails from someone posing as a representative of the IRS, either threatening the would-be victim with legal action if they don’t send money or using the victim’s social security number to file a fraudulent tax return.

Other recent scams discussed include the so-called “Grandparent Scam” and the “Mystery” or “Secret Shopper.”

Capt. Akshar also provides important information on protecting your identity, how to prevent becoming a victim and what to do if you believe you’ve been victimized.

Southern Tier Close Up airs Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
