Officials in the Broome County Sheriff’s Office say they have already addressed concerns brought up in an audit conducted by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office in May that cited ten law enforcement departments for being slow in updating information on registered sex offenders.

The audit showed many agencies didn’t always act on state notification that they should update photos, addresses, employment information and descriptions for moderate and high risk offenders.

The Comptroller says of the county and municipal law enforcement agencies names, the majority agreed with the findings and were either working on or had completed changes based on the recommendations.

In the case of Broome County, at least, the County was not actually in violation of any regulations and officials in the Sheriff’s Office said most of the problems involved clerical communication.

Auditors looked at offices in Broome, Cayuga, Oneida, Ontario, Saratoga, Saint Lawrence, Steuben, Suffolk Counties and city police in Buffalo, Mount Vernon, Ogdensburg, Rochester, Syracuse and Utica.
