Authorities say the inmate, Christopher Ellis, shoved the officer and ran from the hospital on the city's South Side on Thursday. He is said to have fled the emergency room and raced down a hall to make his getaway.

Investigators say Ellis, who lives on Park Avenue near the hospital, was apprehended by a Broome County sheriff's deputy who already was in the area.

Ellis was returned to the emergency room and later was brought back to the county jail on Upper Front Street in the Town of Dickinson. He was being held on a fugitive from justice warrant.

Officials said there also was a warrant out of Binghamton for escape.

Ellis was charged with second-degree escape, a felony. He also was charged with obstructing governmental administration.
