A plan to direct fees from the operation of a medical marijuana distribution facility in Johnson City to fighting heroin abuse in Broome County is stalled at the gate.

The Finance Committee of the Broome County Legislature has voted four to one to table a resolution that would have used the revenues for heroin awareness, education and treatment programs.

The committee debated over two hours before deciding the wording in the legislation, authored by Democrat Jason Garnar, was just too vague.

Broome County is expecting $850,000 in excise taxes from the sale of medical marijuana once it gets off the ground next years.  Right now, $100,000 of that revenue is earmarked for the Department of Social Services for general opioid programs.
