The Broome County Health Department building in Binghamton will remain closed until further notice following a problem linked to a renovation project.

The site at 225 Front Street was evacuated Thursday morning because of excessive fumes from a floor sealant that had been used by a contractor doing overnight work.

County Executive Debra Preston says the building will remain closed on Friday and possibly for a couple of days next week.

Preston says she was not aware of any potential health risk to the employees who were in the building before a decision was made to close the site.

About 45 health department workers were relocated to the county Emergency Services facility in the town of Dickinson. Some of the department's other employees were moved to the county office building downtown.

Fans were being used to ventilate the health department's building. County officials were consulting with engineers and contractor representatives as they continued to assess the situation.
