Union officials are expressing concern about Broome County's move toward privatizing the BC Transit bus system.

The county is planning to seek requests for proposals from companies to oversee bus operations.

But that initiative isn't being well-received by leaders of the union that represents BC Transit employees.

Peter Schiraldi, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1145, told WNBF News that county officials haven't provided much information about the options they intend to explore.

Schiraldi said the union represents 80 drivers and mechanics who work for BC Transit.

Schiraldi said "it would have been nice" if the county had advised the union of its plans to look into privatization. He said he's concerned about what might happen if the transit operations are turned over to a for-profit company.
