Broome County officials say they are better prepared for emergencies now.

County Executive Debra Preston and Disaster Preparedness Coordinator Mike Ponticello say the County’s Continuity of Government/Continuity of Operations plan is complete after months of work.

The plan outlines such things as orders of succession for each department and alternate locations should some government buildings be forced to close.

County officials say they won’t have to scramble when there is an emergency to come up with alternate sites and operations as was the case in 2009 when the County Office Building had to close for several weeks due to a dust condition.

Each county department has been given a copy of the plan so everyone knows what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency.

The study cost about $46,000, funded through a federal grant through the Department of Homeland Security.
