Two Broome County sheriff's deputies provided medical aid to a Vestal man when he stopped breathing after a traffic stop in the town of Chenango.

Authorities say Matthew Miernicki of Rita Road was pulled over by a deputy Friday evening for driving without headlights on Route 12.

According to the sheriff's office, the deputy noticed signs of intoxication while speaking with Miernicki. A short time later, the man lost consciousness and stopped breathing.

Deputies called for medical assistance and performed CPR on Miernicki, who began breathing and started to regain consciousness before an ambulance arrived. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Miernicki was processed later and issued appearance tickets for several charges, including felony DWI, a second offense. He also was charged with refusing a preliminary breath test, driving without headlights and moving from a lane unsafely.
