Nearly 900 pounds in old prescription drugs were collected in Broome County over the last several months.

Sheriff David Harder said medication drop boxes that collect the outdated drugs fill up rapidly.

Harder said the drop box in the lobby of the sheriff's office in the Town of Dickinson is emptied every other day.

The agency has another drop box located in the library on Court Street in downtown Binghamton.

The sheriff said 880 pounds of unwanted drugs were collected since September. The old medications were transported to Oswego where they were incinerated.

The medication drop off program makes it possible for people to properly dispose of old drugs. The initiative helps to keep the drugs out of the hands of children and teenagers.

A national drug take-back program is to be held on April 30.
