A neighborhood post office that serves residents of Johnson City and Binghamton won't close but its operating hours will be reduced.

The United States Postal Service evaluated the operations of the Bible School Park post office, which is located on the Davis College campus on Riverside Drive.

Some people who regularly use the post office were concerned when they learned last summer that the facility might be targeted for closure.

A community meeting on the options being considered for the post office was held in August.

Many of the post office's customers urged officials to keep the location open.

The postal service now has announced the site won't be closed.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, postal service spokeswoman Maureen Marion said the office will operate six hours each weekday. That's 45 minutes shorter than the current schedule. Saturday hours won't be changed.

The post office hours will be from 9:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Window service won't be available between 12:15 and 1:30. Saturday window hours will continue to be from 10 a.m. to noon.

The new schedule will take effect January 10.
