Pay for non-union Broome County employees, including elected officials, will not be tied to the rates negotiated between the county and its largest employees’ union.

County Executive Debra Preston has vetoed a resolution that would have given annual raises based on the rate in the Civil Service Employees Association contract.

Preston says she still considers fair compensation for county employees a priority but, in a notice sent to the Legislature, said there was the potential for an appearance of impropriety.

She said she expects the issue to be revisited in upcoming months.

Legislative Chairman Jerry Marinich, who supported the pay raise proposal, agreed that concerns about the plan warranted pushing the “pause button” on the topic.  He said it was time for the County to move on with other business.
