A National Highway Traffic Association grant is helping Broome County to increase patrols to crack down on drinking and driving during prime time periods that traditionally see increased numbers of drunk drivers on area roads.

the $23,712 allocation will cover seven periods through the remainder of this year and through next year.

The first DWI crackdown period focuses on Halloween.

County officials say last year there were 641 drunk driving arrests in Broome.

The grant will be divided among the New York State Police, Sheriff's office and local municipal police departments.
