An inmate at the Broome County Jail was found dead in his cell Wednesday afternoon, just moments after returning from having visitors.

Sheriff's officials say 35-year-old Salladin Barton was found unresponsive on the floor of his cell during a routine inmate count.  Corrections officers put out an emergency call and assisted the nursing staff in performing CPR on Barton.  The inmate was transported to Wilson Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Those interviewed following the incident indicate that Barton was in good spirits.  He was being held for violation of probation, larceny, and robbery charges.  Barton has been incarcerated since June 10th of 2013.

An autopsy was performed on January 15th although no cause of death has been determined at this time.
