Broome County has a dozen new signs on its highways announcing it is a Purple Heart County.

The Purple signs are located on Routes 17 C, 12, 11, 26, 38B, 7 and 434.

The Broome County Legislature adopted a resolution authorizing the signs at a May 2014 meeting to recognize the sacrifices of thousands of local residents who were injured or killed while serving in the U.S. military.

Ten counties in New York State are now designated Purple Heart Counties.

The local signs were funded through the Broome County Veterans Trust Fund account, produced by Corcraft in Menands, New York and installed by the New York State Department of Transportation.
