Preston last month announced she had been diagnosed with lung cancer. She said the final determination came after two months of testing.

Preston last week revealed she would undergo surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan today.

According to a statement attributed to deputy county executives Bijoy Datta and John Bernardo, this morning's surgery went well.

The statement indicated there were "no significant complications" and the procedure went "according to plan."

Preston was said to be recovering in the hospital's intensive care unit. The statement indicated Preston is expected to return to Broome County by the end of the week.

The statement also said Preston appreciates the thoughts, prayers, cards and well wishes she's received.
